Witchers in Paris

Your Internet Cafe
Faculty Members

"This is a photo of me and my youngest daughter Heather taken in front of the Eiffel Tower. We attended classes at the University of London for a summer and took weekend trips to France and Scotland. Thanks to the magic of the Internet, it's possible for us seniors to stay in touch with family and friends whether they are across the street or around the world!

Heather graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Chemical Engineering. When you and I went to school we carried books under our arm. Heather carried a laptop. Our children and grandchildren are growing up with computers. They access the Internet like we open a refrigerator. So when I started creating Lesson Plans for the Internet Cafe, it was only natural that I would ask Heather for some of her ideas. It's been a lot of fun working with her.

After you enroll, I sincerely hope you enjoy and benefit from visiting the Internet Cafe as much as I have."

Obviously, you have some knowledge of the Internet or you would not be reading this. Isn't it fascinating? We can sit at our computers and in a matter of seconds gather valuable information and communicate with people all over the world.

As a matter of fact, I remember one morning while I was sitting at my computer in Dallas, TX and I received an email from my youngest daughter Heather (who is now working with me on this department), from Capri, Italy. She was touring Italy on vacation and she was sitting by the pool on the Isle of Capri overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. She sent an email telling us about her fabulous trip and directing us to a website...Capri.net.

Via the Internet we could see what she was seeing...the hotel she was staying at and the beautiful Isle of Capri. In just a few minutes, I visited with my daughter in another country, toured the Isle of Capri, and never left my comfy chair in front of my computer. Unbelievable. And all of this magic is available to us with the click of a mouse.

Did you know that the World Wide Web was developed in 1989 by Tim Berners-Lee of the European Particle Physics Lab (CERN) in Switzerland? 1989! My two daughters are older than the Internet!

As far as how it works, the initial purpose of the Web was to use networked hypertext to facilitate communication among its members, who were located in several countries. But hey, you know what. It's sort of like electricity. You and I are never going to understand or fully appreciate the inner workings of our electrical system. All we know is we flip a switch and a light goes on. The same is true with the Internet. If we know where and how to click...magic happens and the world opens before us.

After you enroll, we will teach you how to "surf the web" and have a lot of fun doing it.

  • We're going to show you how you can search for and find information on practically any topic

  • How you can communicate with a friend across the street or around the world

  • How you can use Internet maps and directions to find your way in your own country and around the globe

  •  How to get the weather reports for anywhere in the world

The possibilities are endless.
